Box Office Battle: 'The Lion King' roars to number 1 in $185M U.S. debut

"Box Office Battle" is The Fly's weekly roundup of what movies topped the weekend's box office.

Disney’s (DIS) "The Lion King" opened to a record-breaking $185M at the North American box office over the weekend for a global total of $531M. Overseas, the movie earned $269.4M from 52 markets. "The Lion King" received 55% on Rotten Tomatoes and an A CinemaScore.

BOX OFFICE RUNNERS-UP: Sony (SNE) and Disney-owned Marvel Studios' "Spider-Man: Far From Home" fell to number two in its third weekend, grossing $21M and passing the $300M mark domestically. Behind it was another Disney title, "Toy Story 4," earning $14.6M in its fifth weekend for a domestic total of $375.5M and $859.4M globally. Viacom (VIAB) subsidiary Paramount's "Crawl" placed number four with $6M. Rounding out the top five, Comcast (CMCSA) subsidiary Universal's "Yesterday" grossed another $5.1M for a domestic cume of $57.6M and a global tally of $98.2M.
